Utility Operator(s) – Public Works
The City of Crest Hill (population 20,837), a progressive, growing community in the north central region of Will County, seeks an individual to work in the Public Works Department. The Utilities employee works under the immediate supervision of the Crew Leader and Director of Public Works.
General Purpose:
The Wastewater Operator performs a variety of tasks in the maintenance and operation of the municipal wastewater treatment system.
Supervision Received:
The Wastewater Operator works under the immediate supervision and direction of the Crew Leader and Director of Public Works.
Supervision Exercised:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Performs daily laboratory tests, collects samples, and adjusts chemical feed equipment.
- Prepares reports on plant operations; maintains accurate record keeping of plant activities and samples taken.
- Ensures compliance with applicable wastewater treatment requirements and safety standards.
- Cleans, repairs, and maintains equipment at wastewater treatment facilities.
- Assists in the maintenance of buildings, facilities, and grounds.
- Assists and works collaboratively with water staff.
- Performs operations related to snow and ice control, including anti-icing, de-icing, plowing streets, sidewalks, and disposing of snow.
- Assists other departments, utilities, or contractors, in the event of emergency, personnel shortage, major construction or maintenance activity, or as otherwise needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Desired Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- Minimum age of 18 years required.
- High School diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
- Municipal public works experience preferred.
- Within six months of hire, obtain a State of Illinois Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a classification of A or B and air brake endorsement.
- Valid Driver’s license.
- Class 4 IEPA Wastewater License or IEPA Collection System License (Wage: $32.47/Hr)
- Class 1 IEPA Wastewater License or IEPA Collection System License (Wage: $37.89/Hr)
- Providing excellent customer service when interacting with residents is required. Normal work hours are 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday, and must be available for after-hours work as needed.
- Municipal public works experience preferred.
This is a union position that is under the Civil Service Commission that requires interested applicants to complete a physical/technical test and personal interview in order to be placed on a hiring list. Applicants with the highest score will be considered first when openings occur. Minimum score for placement on the hiring list is 70. Once a list is established the individuals on the list will be considered for employment when an opening occurs for up to two years. There is currently an opening. Annual increases and fully paid health insurance and defined pension vesting after 10 years of service.
